7 Reasons to Give Living Alone a Shot

Whether or not to live alone can be a tough decision for some. After living with others for so long, the thought of being lonely can be daunting. Afterall, we humans are naturally social beings.

But those who make the decision to live on their own, usually find it comes with more perks than disadvantages.

Here’s why many who take the chance, end up loving it:

You can finally do what you want, when you want.

When living alone, there’s no need to worry about someone else’s plans conflicting with your own. If you want to have a few friends over for a potluck dinner, go for it. Impromptu late night dance party? Sure. Heck, if you want to spend all night alone watching sappy romcoms in your favorite footie pajamas, there’s no one around to judge you.

It’s all about moving at your own pace and not having to ask anyone else’s permission to do so.

You set the house rules.

You can keep your place as clean or as messy as you see fit. No more living up (or down) to someone else’s standard of living and no more compromising. No one’s nagging you to mop the floor, pay the bills or clean the dishes. And if the place looks like a tornado just hit, it’s because you left it that way.

You’re bound to become more responsible.

When you live alone there’s no one around to blame but yourself. This means, like it or not, you’re going to have more responsibilities. You’ll learn how to budget, pay your bills on time, make repairs and even do away with those pesky creepy crawlers.

If something goes wrong, it’s on you. When something goes right, a celebration is in order! Success tastes so much sweeter when you’ve accomplished it on your own.

You’re finally allowed (even encouraged) to be selfish.

Whoever said “sharing is caring,” has clearly never lived on their own. When you have your own place, you don’t have to worry about sharing your personal space with others. All the snacks in the cabinet? Yours. All the coats in the hall closet? Yours. Feel free to put whatever you want, wherever you want it, without worrying that someone will eat it, use it or lose it.

You’ll actually see improvement in your social life.

When you live with friends, it’s easy to rely on seeing them everyday without making concrete plans. If they’re not around all the time, you’ll have to reach out more if you want to keep your relationships intact. That means more movie nights and dinner dates. You may even come to appreciate your relationships more after spending so much time alone.

You’ll come to realize that alone and lonely mean different things.

Even if you consider yourself a social butterfly, there will inevitably be times in your life when you find yourself alone. It’s important to learn how to deal with feelings of loneliness and find comfort in the silence. Give it some time and you’ll probably find that you even enjoy and value your alone time.

You’ll learn more about yourself.

Only when you spend some real time alone, do you really get to know yourself. You’ll start to get a real understanding of who you are, what you like and what you can’t stand, without the influence of others. Who knows, you may even learn to really like yourself!
